A Look at Our Hometown – La Grange, Kentucky

Share with Friends and Family

We thought our first post should be about where we live.  Oldham County, Kentucky, is such a great place to live and we’re excited to share it with you.

We have lived here since 2004 and love everything about it.  Oldham County is just outside of Louisville, but is far enough away to feel a little bit rural, yet there are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby.

The city of La Grange has a quaint downtown area where a train runs right through the middle of Main Street.

Our kids love coming to downtown La Grange and browsing the shops, grabbing a cup of hot chocolate from the locally owned coffee shop, and watching the train go by.

Our good friends Chris and Lea own La Grange Coffee Roasters, which is a fabulous place to grab a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or latte. They are located right on Main Street and if you grab a seat inside or out, you will be sure to catch a glimpse of the train going by.

One of our favorite shops to stop in and visit is Out of the Blue, which is run by our good friend Jamie. Out of the Blue is located at 107 1/2 N. Walnut Ave, which is a side street right along Main Street. Their specialty is putting together one of a kind gift boxes that you can design for any occasion. It’s so fun to go in their shop and pick out the perfect present for your loved one, friend, or co-worker. Everything in their shop is also sold a-la-carte, so if you’re not interested in putting together an entire box, you can still grab what you want. They’ve also started selling some amazing balloon creations as well.

One of the newest additions to the area is a drive-in movie theater.  I never went to a drive-in theater as a kid, so I was able to experience this for the first time with my children.  On our first visit to the Sauerbeck Family drive-in, we saw The Polar Express and The Grinch.  Even though it was quite chilly out, we all had a great time.  The drive-in movie is the only movie theater in the whole county, so it is quite popular.

Another fun place that we like to go to is Sisters Tea Parlor.  They are half boutique and half sit down tea parlor.  Every month or so, they offer special themed events, such as Downton Abbey, Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland teas.  We have enjoyed all of our visits there, as the food, tea, and ambiance are absolutely perfect. Edit: Sadly Sisters Tea Parlor has closed their brick and mortar store, and has transitioned to an online store.

You are encouraged to dress up when you come to dine in for tea. They have hats and accessories available for anyone who wants to get fancy.

I hate to brag, but I think we have one of the most amazing library systems.  In 2009 a brand new library opened and our lives haven’t been the same since.  When Silas, Cullan, and Micah were little, we went to storytime every week.  I loved that the kids were able to do a fun craft each time, and I didn’t have to worry about cleaning up!  Definitely an ideal scenario for a mom with three little ones.

Since then we have participated in a wide variety of library programs.  Ranging from storytime, craft activities, family fun activities, gingerbread house making, live animal events, puppet shows, game days, Pokemon club, cooking club, gardening club, kindness club, and adult programs.  This doesn’t even include all of the programs/activities that are available during their summer reading program each year.

There’s a lab area where they have a lot of fun tech like a 3-D printer and coding robots. Right outside the lab is a dedicated space for teens. Micah’s not a teen, but we stopped in there to check out a chess set that they made with the 3-D printer. It was really neat! Silas is looking forward to being old enough to participate in the teen programs next year.

In the center of the library, there’s a fireplace surrounded by plenty of seating and tables, where you can read, study or play a game.

There are tons of games available to play with while you’re at the library, as well as a section of activity tubs to check out in the children’s area. There’s definitely something for everyone.

The Oldham County History Center has also become a family favorite.  There are several buildings on the property, one of which is a museum.  The museum underwent a major renovation and reopened in 2017.  There are a lot of programs that the center offers for all ages.  They offer a weekly program for preschool-aged children called History Hounds, and a monthly program for home-school families. Earlier this year, they offered a Junior Ranger program that Silas, Cullan, and Micah all participated in.  Each month they learned about a different National Park.  At the Dahlgren Pioneer Barn they offer cooking demonstrations at their colonial hearth.  We’ve sampled potato soup, soda bread, and freshly churned butter.  They frequently host dinner cruises and have a dinner author series, as well as a yearly public archaeological dig.  It’s such a unique place and we are lucky to have it nearby.

Even though we love to travel quite a bit, and discover new things, we are so delighted to live in a place like Oldham County.  As Cullan’s beloved Dorothy would say, “There’s no place like home.”
